Breaking News: Sanctions placed on Australian wine exported to Russia

The Australian Government has advised that Australia will impose further sanctions against Russia in response to Russia’s invasion on Ukraine. Australia will prohibit the supply, sale or transfer of certain luxury goods directly or indirectly to, for use in, or for the benefit of Russia.

From 12:01am on 7 April 2022, the export of wine from Australia to Russia will be prohibited in accordance with Australia’s sanction laws.

Once the sanctions come into force, Wine Australia will not be able to approve any wine exports to Russia through its online Licensing and Approval System (WALAS). This includes shipments destined for Russia that would ordinarily be re-exported to other markets.

Australian companies who supply wine from third countries to Russia may also be impacted by these sanctions and should contact the Australian Sanctions Office to understand their compliance requirements.

Any questions relating to the sanctions should be directed to the Australian Sanctions Office via its online portal which is accessible here.
