As noted in previous editions of Member Bites, the European Union (EU) is expected to implement new requirements for products sold on the European market to include Nutritional and Ingredient labelling. These requirements were established under the EU Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) Reforms, implemented in 2021. They establish a framework for wine labelling of nutritional declaration (energy content) on-label, and the list of ingredients off-label (e.g., digital) and are due to come into force by 8 December 2023.
The EU had previously noted the delegated Act would be made available by the end of 2022, bringing clarity on how to implement this new requirement. On 26 January 2023, the EU released a consultation process for the draft delegated regulation, which seeks to clarify the rules for applying the new requirements.
Australian Grape & Wine is working with our Wine Industry Technical Advisory Committee, Wine Australia and international colleagues to understand these requirements, seeking to establish mechanisms which support Australian producers to comply with the measures.
We are also working with European colleagues to investigate opportunities for greater harmonisation between these requirements. Australia’s recently announced proposal (Proposal P1059 – Energy labelling on alcoholic beverages (foodstandards.gov.au) and others are being considered across the world.
