Wine Australia has today released the Review of Regulatory Options for the Wine and Grape Sector, prepared by Dr Craig Emerson.
The report recommends a series of reforms aimed at addressing power imbalances in the supply chain and improving commercial practices. This includes a proposal for a mandatory Code of Conduct for winegrape purchases, as well as reforms to transparency, payment terms, and dispute resolution.
Importantly, the Australian Government has not yet issued a response to the recommendations.
Australian Grape & Wine will now carefully consider the report and its implications in consultation with members and stakeholders. It is imperative that the sector has a strong voice in the design and implementation of any reforms the Government chooses to proceed with.
We support the report’s recommendation to establish a working group to guide the development of reforms. The approach needs to reflect the diversity of business interactions across our sector. Striking the right balance will be critical to ensuring that any future Code of Conduct is fit for purpose, delivers genuine benefits for both growers and winemakers, and avoids unintended consequences.
This is a significant moment for our sector. With meaningful industry involvement, we can help shape a more transparent, fair and resilient supply chain that supports long-term success.
