International Women’s Day 2024

Today, on International Women’s Day, and in line with the 2023 Australian Women in Wine Symposium’s call to ACTION, Australian Grape & Wine celebrates the sector’s ACTION on gender equality with a positive step towards real change.

The Workplace Gender Equality Agency’s recent report on gender pay gaps in Australia has sparked a wave of action within various industries, and the Australian wine sector is no exception. Our Diversity, Equality, and Inclusion in Wine (DEIW) Committee, a driving force behind gender equality initiatives in the Australian wine sector, has achieved a significant milestone with the approval of funding for benchmarking research through Wine Australia.

In response to the call for prioritising gender equality research and data, the DEIW Committee, through persistent efforts, successfully advocated for funding to conduct a scoping study on gender equality within the Australian grape and wine sector.

This ground-breaking research, funded by Wine Australia, aims to:

  • Identify and analyse existing available data, address data gaps, and propose an optimum future state;
  • Gain insights into challenges and opportunities, laying the foundation for informed decision-making with clarified roles and responsibilities;
  • Identify, share, and amplify practical strategies, resources, and success stories in fostering gender equality.

The DEIW Committee, actively engaged in pushing for this funding, expresses its thrill and appreciation for the upcoming research set to be conducted in 2024, aligning with the sector’s commitment to diversity, equality, and inclusion as evidenced by the One Grape & Wine Sector Plan.

The wine sector recognises the importance of attracting and retaining a more inclusive workforce, valuing diverse perspectives, and demonstrating Diversity, Equality, and Inclusion performance on a global stage in line with Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) credentials.

The current focus on gender equality is a crucial starting point, setting the stage for future endeavours in Diversity, Equality, and Inclusion. The sector remains committed to addressing other funding priorities while actively championing a unified collective action for a more equitable and inclusive industry.

Support the Australian wine sector as we strive towards equality and inclusion.
